Role models of greatness.

Here you will discover the back stories of kings, titans of industry, stellar athletes, giants of the entertainment field, scientists, politicians, artists and heroes – all of them gay or bisexual men. If their lives can serve as role models to young men who have been bullied or taught to think less of themselves for their sexual orientation, all the better. The sexual orientation of those featured here did not stand in the way of their achievements.

Matt Dallas

Actor Matt Dallas announced plans to marry his boyfriend, Blue Hamilton*, a 25-year-old musician based in Los Angeles. Dallas, the former star of the ABC Family network sci-fi series “Kyle XY”, came out as gay when he announced his engagement.

Dallas wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday, January 6: “Starting off the year with a new fiancé, Blue Hamilton. A great way to kick off 2013!”

*There has been widespread confusion in recent days when Matt's fiancé has been misidentified as Brandon “Blue” Hamilton, an African-American Atlanta-based songwriter who has worked with Justin Bieber. Not one and the same. See music video at end of post.

In early 2009, Matt had been linked to "Mean Girls" actor Jonathan Bennett, from whom he split that same summer. In September, 2009, Dallas and Hamilton were spotted together on a date at a restaurant in West Hollywood.

Engagements are becoming an understated way for gay celebrities to acknowledge their sexual orientation. In October, Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion came out by mentioning his engagement (to partner Rubem Robierb) in a New York Times article; Champion and Robierb were married on December 21 in NYC. In contrast to magazine cover coming out declarations in the past (think Neil Patrick Harris and Lance Bass), low key statements have become the norm. "White Collar" star Matt Bomer came out while accepting an award last February, and "Star Trek" actor Zachary Quinto revealed he is gay during a profile in New York magazine in October, 2011.

Matt Dallas headed back to ABC Family, joining the cast of “Baby Daddy”, a sitcom starring
Jean-Luc Bilodeau, who plays a twenty-something who navigates the world of being a single parent with the help of family and friends. Dallas is once more working with his former “Kyle XY” co-star Bilodeau, who played his younger brother on that series. For three seasons of “Kyle XY” Dallas played Kyle, the belly-button-free character. Last August ABC Family renewed “Baby Daddy”, which launched as the top comedy series in the network's history. The second season will air this spring.

Much less is known about Blue Hamilton, who has numerous extra-musical interests. When not crafting his music, he renovates houses, is an avid dog enthusiast, an equal rights supporter, wine connoisseur and environmentalist.
