It's almost like homosexuality is being thrown as a slur here; the full sentence reads "The new system bought to the throne in 1910 an erratic homosexual who would have been passed over in an earlier age." Anderson also cited Thongchai Winichakul's doctoral dissertation a few pages before the "erratic homosexual" passage, but I am not very familiar with the Thai historian's work, so I don't know what to make with that. In Thailand Thongchai was known as a famous anti-royalist scholar. It's no doubt that this article is on bias. Perhaps Anderson called him erratic because of this: "Their leaders accused the King of devoting all his time to writing plays and acting in them with his male companions. They also accused him of living a luxurious western lifestyle, building palaces and gardens and owning expensive horses from Australia, while preaching to his subjects to be austere and nationalistic."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984317470266050424.post-54884703526663146772015-10-25T23:22:35.693-04:002015-10-25T23:22:35.693-04:00That's the exact same reason why I was reading...That's the exact same reason why I was reading this. I also am reading Imagined Communities, and I am trying to figure out why he called him an "erratic homosexual." This is the third article I've read about him, and I'm still not sure why Anderson said that.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02026406476895840974noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-984317470266050424.post-18486424805604166052013-12-01T00:47:34.358-05:002013-12-01T00:47:34.358-05:00Was he erratic? Because Benedict Anderson calls hi...Was he erratic? Because Benedict Anderson calls him "an erratic homosexual" in the book Imagined Communities. I am trying to understand if that was said because his ruling was erratic or because he was homosexual. If it is the later Anderson sounds homophobic.Project Curvehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14847029714989062215noreply@blogger.com
